Walking and Cycling

Nearly 55% of working residents in Colchester live within 5 km (3 miles) of their workplace. This is a reasonable distance to walk or cycle and will often be a quicker (around 45-50 minutes walk and 25 minutes by bike) and cheaper option than driving when taking into account waiting in traffic, finding somewhere to park and parking costs. Walking and cycling are a good way of keeping fit, enjoying your surroundings and arriving at work or home refreshed and alert.

Fear of on-road cycling is one of the main barriers to people cycling to work or school. This can be addressed through Bikeability training for adults and children. The new National Standard in cycle training provides practical experience of how to interact with other road users, negotiate junctions confidently and ride assertively. The Travel Plan Club supports and promotes cycle training for all ages.

Every year, the Colchester2020 Travel Plan Club invites the community of Colchester to join them in celebrating national Bike Week www.bikeweek.org.uk which takes place in June. Information regarding plans for Bike Week can be found at www.colchester2020.com from April.

If you don't want to walk or cycle alone, use the walkBUDi or cycleBUDi matching scheme offered by this website to find a partner.
